"The most radical
departure from photo-based imagery in the show is Jim
Hamlyn's sculpture ("Origin") made with light bulbs. In
this piece, two rows of light bulbs are placed at an
oblique angle so that the spheres of the bulbs are
positioned above one another. A fine stream of glycerine
drops onto the bulbs, tracing its transparent path across
them in subtle patterns. Besides the use of illumination
and light transmitting materials (glycerine, glass),
another thing this work has in common with the
photographic, in the more usual sense, is the quality of
close, nuanced observation it demands of the
viewer."
